House with a column and a circular patio, Valle de Bravo, Mexico
This weekend house is for a retired couple. It is a small gesture in a large site. They asked for a comfortable living space with a peaceful connection to the exterior. It is composed by a circle—the patio—and a rectangular volume—the house. Both figures join in the most minimal way possible, just by overlapping the northwest corner of the house with the patio. This corner disappears as it touches the circle, while a big concrete squared column appears in the opposite corner. You enter the house through a door next to the column. The ground floor consists of a single and open family room. It is partially sunken in the ground so nature is perceived differently from the inside. A spiral staircase leads you to the upper floor that contains the bedroom and bathroom. A large round window on each room frames the surrounding landscape. Strong concrete gestures on the ground floor give support to the lightweight wooden structure above. Each figure emphasizes the size of the other. The almost exaggerated circular patio contains a water body, trees, rocks, a grill platform, and grass hills. From the inside of this space one lives the landscape as an immersive experience, an enclosed—yet very open—garden. From the outside one sees the house as an object cohabiting with nature.
